LIVING LIKE I’M LEAVING

A devotion by Vince Lichlyter based on the Jonah33 song
Track #10: "NEED TO LET GO"

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)

I had always told myself that it would be the worst day of my life. It was. June 11, 2001--the day my father passed away. Dad was a strong, tough man who worked harder than almost anyone I know. He could sock you in the gut and have you feeling good about it five seconds later. He was very funny, quietly generous, and just plain nice to people.

My father was also a true hero. Not only did he serve over half of his life in the military, fighting in both Korea and Vietnam, but he also saved my life on two separate occasions. The first was when he and Mom adopted me at the mere age of three, giving me a new chance at life. The second was at age 19, when--after spending six years abusing my parents’ trust--he allowed me to move back home because I was so strung out on drugs that I was suicidal.

If you’ve never lost someone you love, you will. It doesn’t matter your religion, race, or creed, someone you know is going to slip into eternity. And when it happens, it is earth shattering. When my father died, I was so overcome that I holed myself up in my house for days, too depressed to do anything. But the Lord sent a friend of mine to encourage me. His dad had died the year before. I will never forget what he told me that day. He said—in no disrespect at all to my father’s passing—that I needed to shake it off and move on. My wife needed me. My son needed me. My time to mourn as a son was over, and I needed to move on as a father.

Wow. That shook me to my core. Even though these words didn’t stop the pain of missing him, it put my own life into perspective. It reminded me that all of us are eternal souls. It reminded me that life is short, no matter how long we live. It made me consider what kind of legacy I am going to leave behind with my family and friends.

In the end, it all comes down to two things: do I know Christ as Lord and do I invest in the relationships with those around me? Am I really “being Jesus” to my wife and son? To my friends? Am I consumed by the little annoyances in life, or am I sacrificing myself at every opportunity so those around me can see who Jesus really is?

Years before, Dad had chosen to trust Christ with his life...and his death. He ran the race, and he fought the good fight. Some days, he gave all he had to give; and others, well, he wasn’t so godly. But he crossed the finish line into Heaven. If I couldn’t let go of my grief, I would miss out on giving to my son the legacy that my dad gave to me. That’s part of the beauty of death in Christ. It’s a new beginning. For Dad: eternal life. For me: a rite of passage from son to father.

Today’s prayer: God, I pray that You would help me to re-prioritize things in my life. Help me to see how fragile we are and how much strength there is in You. I desire to leave a Godly legacy for those around me, so please show me how to rid my life of anything that would hinder that. Thank you for the gift of life, and I pray I would never take it for granted. Amen.

DIG DEEPER!

A devotion by Vince Lichlyter based on the Jonah33 song
Track #9: "MYSTERY"

I have always been a curious guy. I was the kid who got a toy for Christmas, and by New Year’s Day had it torn apart so I could see how it worked. Curiosity had at least something to do with why I left home at 13 to pursue a life of drug-induced mayhem that ended in total disaster. So imagine my curiosity when I was encountered by Christ! Here was this God who created romance and planets and music and He was introducing himself to me so that I could get to know Him better! Since that day, I have never stopped wanting to know more about God.

At first, I thought it might be possible to become an “expert” on God, as if He were a sports team or rock band or video game. But think about it: a god who was totally understandable really wouldn’t be a god worth serving. God’s ways will always be higher than our ways, and His thoughts will always be higher than our thoughts because that is the way He designed it.

So should we give up searching? After all, science, logic, and philosophy cannot tell us much about God. The answer is so simple: an infinitely unknowable God has to REVEAL Himself to us! In his letter to the Christians at Colossae, Pastor Paul shows us three clear ways we can dig into the mystery of God: through His Word, through His Saints, and through His Son.

"I have become its [the Gospel’s] servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the Word of God in its fullness- the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory." Colossians 1:25 - 27

God’s Word is contained in the 66 books of the Bible, a “God-breathed” account of “His-Story” from the beginning of time to the beginning of eternity. Spend time in Scripture and you will discover not only a loving Heavenly Father, but also the Lover of your soul.

God’s Saints are not fluffy-winged angels sitting on clouds playing harps. Rather, the “saints” are those whose lives have been “saint-tified” by his love and mercy. All believers are “saints,” and we meet together as the Church—the Body of Christ—to worship Him and serve one another.

God’s Son is the very embodiment of His glory, grace, and love. Jesus told His disciples that if they had seen Him, then they had seen His Father as well. We discover so much about God as we read about Jesus in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—the New Testament Gospels. And Christ reveals His character in us through His Holy Spirit who indwells and empowers us. God wants you to know Him more! Do you feel the same way about Him? Ask and you will receive. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened. Dig and you will go deeper!

Today’s prayer: God, I pray that you would give me an insatiable passion for Your presence. Your dimensions never end, and I want to experience everything You are. Help me out of the pit of complacency and into the depths of Your heart. Speak to me, show me Your mysteries, and I will listen. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.

WHEN WILL MEN BE MEN?

A devotion by Vince Lichlyter based on the Jonah33 song
Track #8: "FATHER’S SONG"
From the album The Strangest Day

“The righteous man leads a blameless life and blessed are his children after him."--Proverbs 20:7

I will never forget the morning my son was born. I was a nervous wreck. I paced the hospital floor and chomped my gum like a college basketball coach. My wife was in agony, and there wasn’t a thing that I could do for her. Nurses were running around doing whatever nurses do, and then it happened. The next thing I remember was the mid-wife asking me "Daddy, do you want to help deliver the baby?" Of course I did! In a flash I was at the foot of the bed, ready to be “Dr.” Vince Lichlyter. I helped deliver our baby, then cut the cord, and there he was: my newborn son. And boy, was I proud and relieved. The tough part was over. Or at least that’s what I thought. I don’t think I have ever been more wrong in all my life. The tough part had just begun!
Being a dad is probably the most challenging thing that a man can do. We live in a world where we are trained to look out for "numero uno"...to place ourselves above others because if we don’t, no one else will. So being a good father requires a sense of self-sacrifice, which is unfamiliar territory to most men. In America, 40% of children today will grow up WITHOUT a father in their home. More than 50% of all new marriages will end in divorce.
Men have abandoned their role, their responsibility, and their reward for fulfilling God’s plan and purpose as husbands, fathers, and brothers in Christ. I know that this isn’t the kind of thing that rock bands usually sing about, but if we don’t change, our civilization WILL ultimately fall apart.

From the very dawn of history--from the very first chapters of the Bible--God ordained men to provide for the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of his wife and children. God established the family as the basic unit of society, with the man in the leadership role. Rather than being a position of self-glorification and self-gratification, this role is a sacred trust, a profound responsibility, and a sacrificial service. Guys, the fact that you’re a male doesn’t make you a man, and just because you can make a girl pregnant doesn’t make you a dad.

I know that I don’t have it all figured out, but this one thing is sure: if you are a husband or a father, our wives and kids need us to be all God called us to be. We need to re-examine the values of integrity and honor and commitment clearly communicated in God’s Word.
I also want to encourage those of you that haven’t had the best father figure in the past. Know that God designed the position of "father,” and He knows exactly the love and support you need. Let Him into the chamber of your heart that you have reserved for the bitterness and hurt of your past, and He will set you free from this pain.
Today’s prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of my family. Help me to rise up and fill the role You have given me with grace and love. Help me to earn respect, give respect, and model respect in my family. I pray for my parents, and pray that you will help me grow into the man or woman, husband or wife that You want me to be. Change my heart, change my family, change my world. Thank You for Your healing, and I ask that it would come even now. Amen.

What Is Heaven Like? - With God Forever

If heaven is real, what is it like? I've never met a Christian who didn't want to know the answer to this question--including me! Even Jesus' disciples wondered; immediately after He taught them about heaven, Thomas protested, "Lord, we don't know where you are going" (John 14:5).

The Bible doesn't answer all our questions about heaven and what it will be like--because heaven is far more glorious than anything we can imagine. Heaven is like the most perfect and beautiful place we can conceive--only more so. Only in heaven will we know exactly what heaven is like. The writer of Revelation, searching for words to describe his glimpse of heaven's splendor, said that "it shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel. . . . The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass" (Revelation 21:11, 21). Paul wrote, "Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully" (1 Corinthians 13:12).

Nevertheless, the Bible doesn't leave us in the dark about heaven--and everything it tells us should make us want to go there. Let's look at four truths the Bible teaches about heaven and what will happen to us there.

First, the Bible says that in heaven we will be with God. Heaven is many things--but the most important is this: Heaven is God's dwelling place. It is the place where God lives! It's true that God is everywhere, but heaven is more than a place. It is a whole different dimension of existence, and God is in its midst, with Christ at His right hand. The Bible says, "We will be with the Lord forever" (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

Think of it: We will be with God forever! And because we will be with Him, we will be absolutely safe from all evil. Sorrow and suffering will never again touch us--never. One of the most moving passages in all the Bible is found in its next to last chapter: And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. (Revelation 21:3-4)

Our Final Destination - How Do We Know?

One of the Bible's greatest truths is that we were not meant for this world alone. Death is not the end of life; it is only the gateway to eternity. We were meant to live forever, and death is only a transition from this life to the next. The question isn't whether or not there is life after death. The only question is where we will spend eternity--either with God in that place of endless joy the Bible calls heaven, or apart from Him in that place of endless despair the Bible calls hell.

Why isn't death the end as it appears to be? Job lamented, "Man born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. He springs up like a flower and withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure. . . . Man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last and is no more" (Job 14:1-2, 10). Yet Job knew this isn't the whole story. Someday this life will end, but for the Christian death also marks a beginning--the beginning of a new life with God that will last forever. Paul put it this way: "'No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him'--but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit" (1 Corinthians 2:9-10). In the midst of life's disappointments and sufferings, heaven is our glorious hope.

To many, however, any talk about heaven or eternal life is only wishful thinking. "Heaven is just a myth as far as I'm concerned," one man wrote me. "I'd like to think we'll live forever, but once we're dead, that's the end."

Is he right? How do we know heaven is real? One reason is because of our inner yearning. Virtually every religion believes in some type of afterlife, and down inside we all sense there must be something beyond this life. This life is incomplete, and we yearn for its fulfillment. Where did this universal yearning come from? The Bible says God implanted it within us: "He has also set eternity in the hearts of men" (Ecclesiastes 3:11). We were made for God, and we yearn to be with Him forever. We can suppress this or convince ourselves it isn't true--but we still hope that life's injustices and evils will be made right someday.

We also know heaven is real because of God's promises. From one end of the Bible to the other, God assures us that we were made to live with Him forever. The psalmist declared, "Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever" (Psalm 23:6). Job affirmed, "I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God" (Job 19:25-26). Jesus promised, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies" (John 11:25). Paul taught, "Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands" (2 Corinthians 5:1).

There is, however, a third reason why we know heaven is real: because of Christ's death and resurrection for us. Why did Jesus Christ leave heaven's glory and enter this sin-infested world? For one reason: to make our eternal salvation possible. When God created Adam and Eve, His plan was that they would live in perfect harmony with Him forever. But Satan was determined to change that, and with his lies he lured them away from God. When that happened, death came upon the human race, and we are all its victims. Never forget: Death was Satan's greatest victory.

But by His death and resurrection, Jesus Christ reversed this. The Bible says Christ came to "free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death" (Hebrews 2:15). Think of it: Satan's greatest victory has now been turned into defeat! Death has now been put to death! No wonder the Bible says, "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? . . . Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:55, 57).

Christ's motive in coming to earth was love, and His goal was to destroy death and take us to be with the Father forever. Jesus' resurrection proves beyond all doubt that death is not the end, and ahead of us is heaven. Jesus promised, "In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you" (John 14:2). This is our sure hope.

OUR GLORIOUS HOPE

He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will beno more death or mourning or crying or pain,
for the old order of things has passed away.
-Revelation 21:4
Life is hard--but God is good, and heaven is real.
No one doubts the first part of that sentence: Life is hard. Often while writing this chapter my mind has been preoccupied by the death and destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina along the southern coast of the United States. Like the devastating tsunami that struck South Asia only months before, hundreds of thousands were driven from their homes and forced to find shelter elsewhere, often fleeing with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. One family whom a church near us adopted arrived bruised and battered from wading for miles through debris-filled water, a story that could be duplicated thousands of times. Eventually that area will be rebuilt and Katrina may fade from our view, but in the meantime life is hard for those who have been affected--very hard.
Most of us probably will never experience a disaster of this magnitude--but we too know life is hard. Sometimes its harshness comes upon us suddenly and without warning; sometimes it stays with us most of our lives. In this book we have looked at some of life's heartaches and struggles, but no single volume can begin to deal with all of them. Life has its share of joys and laughter--but we also know life's road is often very rough. Temptations assail us; people disappoint us; illness and age weaken us; tragedies and sorrows ambush us; evil and injustice overpower us.
Life is hard--but God is good, and heaven is real!

Billy Graham and A Message of Hope for this Easter Season

Would you like glorious hope for the future?
You can’t change the past. Whatever has happened—good and bad—cannot be altered, and all the events that have made you what you are today are inscribed in your life's story.
But with God’s help you can change the future and you can start right now. The future doesn’t need to be a copy of the past, nor does God want it to be. No matter what your life has been like, God wants to put your feet on a new path…His path.
It is my prayer that God will use Billy Graham's new book, The Journey, to help you discover a new kind of life—the greatest journey ever. It isn’t always easy, but even in the midst of problems; you will discover God is good. Most of all, yours can be a journey of hope, because it leads to heaven.
This Easter weekend, focus on that hope. That’s why I am sharing with you below a chapter titled “Our Glorious Hope” from Billy Graham's new book, The Journey. It describes God’s plan for us beyond our life on earth and that Christ’s death and resurrection is our assurance of eternal life spent in Heaven. May God bless you as you read it and share it with your friends and family.

The Truth about Love!!!

Truth is clear, but 'truth' without love is not. If we do not look through the lens of love we cannot see truth.
Truth opens, lies close. Truth, no matter how old, is always new. Lies are old, dead, uncreative. Creativity is always about revealing truth. Truth brings life.
The truth has no end, there is always more truth to be had. A lie always has an end. There is no future in a lie.
Truth is life. Truth can be quenched without love, as can life. Life is an expression of God's love. Truth is understanding this. Whenever we come to a dead end, we will discover we have been following a lie.
Jesus Christ said, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I unto the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth hears my voice" John 18:37
The truth about love, is that it is unending. The life of truth is love and the love of truth is life.
John 10:27
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
John 10:28

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

SALVATION INVOLVES SANCTIFICATION

A devotion by Vince Lichlyter based on the Jonah33 song
Track #7: "BURNING CLEAN"
From the album The Strangest Day

Fire can either consume you or purify you. Let me share two amazing passages from God’s Word about "getting burned."

The first one is Proverbs 6:27: "Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?"

This passage is obviously not about setting our pants on fire. Rather, it’s about our tendency to flirt too closely with temptation. More specifically, Proverbs 6:27 is about falling prey to sexual sin.

Make no mistake: sin IS attractive, sin IS pleasurable, and sin IS addictive. Whether it’s the thrill of cheating or stealing, the intoxication of drugs or alcohol, or the rush of porn or violence, "sin"-sation is an "open-throated grave" just waiting for us to fall in.

I should know, as a teenager I fell into an open grave with sides so steep and so slippery that I couldn’t climb out of it. God knows I tried, but there was absolutely nothing I could do to escape. God didn’t help me out; He pulled me out and rescued me. That’s why Christians call this "salvation" or getting "saved."

But salvation isn’t the end of the story; it’s just the first chapter! God wants to give you and me a whole new life in and through Christ. This life-long process is called "sanctification," which literally means, "to be set aside for a holy use." In this second passage, the prophet Isaiah experienced this in a supernatural vision in which he saw the Lord in all His glory:

"‘Woe to me!’ I cried. ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’ Then one of the seraphs [angels] flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it, he touched my mouth and said: ‘See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin is atoned for.’" Isaiah 6:5-7 (NIV)

Isaiah already belonged to God, but the Lord wanted to burn away everything Isaiah used to be so that he could fill him up with His own character and presence. Are you surprised to learn that even believers need to be forgiven (1 John 1:8-9) and transformed daily into His image?

Today’s prayer: Lord, remove these scales from my eyes so that I can see my sin as clearly as You do. Help me to be "undone" by my own sinfulness, and then burned clean by Your holiness from everything I used to be. Reach inside and pull out anything that keeps me from being what I should be. Separate me from my sinful habits and patterns and transform me by the power of Your Holy Spirit . Sanctify me... I give You my life. Amen.
